At Cranage, we work with manufacturers of electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters to evaluate their products comprehensively to ensure adherence to British, European, and international standards. Our UKAS accreditation shows that we provide independent and impartial tests with accurate results.
Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are usually Class 1 medical devices under European Regulations, and manufacturers are responsible for declaring that their products comply with the standards. A manufacturer must complete a technical portfolio, including a risk analysis and Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

Mechanical and Electrical Safety Testing
The team at Cranage EMC and Safety carries out mechanical and electrical safety testing for electric wheelchairs and scooters, as well as EMC testing. It is important to consider that an electric wheelchair must be used indoors and outdoors.
Therefore, we must consider the different environments and test for ambient electromagnetic energy that may be generated from items such as telecom transmissions and televisions, to name just a few.
Our electrical safety testing includes analysis of user manuals, labelling and documentation, and the appropriate mechanical tests. Mechanical tests for wheelchairs and mobility aids may include:

- BS EN / IEC 60601-1 – General requirements for basic safety and essential performance.
- BS EN / IEC 60601-1-2 – Medical Electrical Equipment. General requirements for basic safety and essential performance.
- BS ISO 7176-14 – Power & control systems for electric wheelchairs.
- BS EN ISO 10535 – Hoists, transfer of disabled persons.
- BS EN 12184 – Electrically powered wheelchairs, scooters and their chargers. This applies to products where the maximum speed does not exceed 15km/h and it will carry only one person with a mass no greater than 300 kg.
- BS EN 12182 – Assistive products for persons with disabilities.
- BS ISO 7176-21 – Electrically powered wheelchairs & motorised scooters.
We can also offer EMC testing for lifts, escalators, and moving walkways, which are covered by the standards IEC 12015 and IEC 12016 for emissions and immunity, respectively.
