An EMC failure in the road and rail industries can have potentially catastrophic consequences. Therefore, the reliability and safety of electrical and electronic equipment used on the highway or railway are key issues concerning designers, installers and assessors.
Equipment intended for use in safety-related systems is particularly scrutinised for its immunity to electromagnetic disturbances, both continuous and transient, derived from airborne and conducted sources.
Cranage has specialist knowledge and facilities to investigate and measure the screening performance of cables, connectors, materials, assemblies and electronic modules. We work with clients to investigate the sources of electromagnetic leakage and have developed application-specific shielding solutions to achieve EMC.
Our experience ranges from testing rolling stock apparatuses to vehicle messaging signs, and this aspect of our business is constantly developing as new technologies and products continue to push boundaries.
Road & Rail Standards
The EMC standards below are included within our current UKAS scope for accreditation, specifically for road and railway applications.
It should be noted that aspects of BS EN 50121 parts 2, 3-1 and 5 require on-site testing where the measurement environment does not have the same degree of control as lab testing. Cranage EMC and Safety are able to carry out this testing.

- BS EN 50293 Road traffic signal systems.
- BS EN / IEC 60950-1 ITE. This standard, along with BS EN / IEC 60065 Audio-visual, was withdrawn in December 2020 and replaced with BS EN / IEC 62368 Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment.
- BS EN / IEC 61010-1 Measurement control and laboratory.
- BS EN / IEC 60335-1 Household tools and similar.
