EMC Testing

What is EMC Testing?

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the ability of electrical equipment and systems to perform as intended, without interference, when in close proximity to each other. In modern-day life, we rely heavily on electronic equipment, which may interfere with one another, making EMC testing increasingly important.

Cranage EMC and Safety, based in Shropshire close to Birmingham, offer a complete range of EMC testing throughout the UK, including full compliance, pre-compliance and in-situ testing.

Ensure your electrical equipment performs seamlessly in any environment. Reach out below to explore our comprehensive EMC testing services and safeguard your operations against interference.

EMC Pre-Compliance Testing Services

If a product does not pass complete compliance testing, it may prove costly to change designs and can delay the time to market. During our pre-compliance testing, our experienced engineers will work with you to evaluate your design and identify potential EMC issues, which are usually easier and cheaper to fix in the design stage.

Pre-compliance EMC tests will involve quantifying the product’s emissions and subjecting it to various EMC disturbances that may be experienced in a product’s life cycle. Using Cranage for pre-compliance testing means that the engineers will use specialised, calibrated equipment that is also used in full testing, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

In-Situ EMC Testing

Suppose your item is impractical to move or is large or in situ. In that case, Cranage engineers can come to your premises to conduct a variety of EMC tests that are published within the numerous standards associated with claiming conformity with the CE Mark and UKCA Mark.

Our EMC Chambers

Our fully compliant 3-metre Semi-Anechoic Chamber (SAC) tests radiated electric and magnetic field emissions up to 18GHz, and we can test equipment up to 1 tonne in weight.

Common EMC emissions tests include:

  • Radiated emissions
  • Conducted emissions
  • Harmonic emissions
  • Flicker & Fluctuations

Our fully compliant Fully Anechoic Chamber (FAC) is used for radiated RF immunity, with capabilities of creating electric fields up to 6GHz. The FAC’s door measures 0.9m (w) x 2m (h), and we can test equipment up to 500 kg.

Common EMC immunity tests include:

  • Radiated Radio Frequency (RF) Immunity
  • Conducted Radio Frequency (RF) Immunity
  • Electro Static Discharge Immunity
  • Conducted Power Surge Immunity
  • Voltage Dips and Interruptions Immunity
  • Electrical Fast Transients Burst Immunity
  • Power Frequency Magnetic Field Immunity

ESD Chamber

Electrostatic discharge testing (ESD) is an EMC immunity test, which is used to test an electrical products resistance to a quick release of energy in an electrostatic event. ESD can cause a fast increase in voltage and current, which can damage or destroy electronic components, cause fires in flammable environments or alter magnetic media.

ESD testing ensures that the functionality or performance of the equipment under test is not compromised by exposure to electrostatic discharge.

Common tests carried out in the ESD chamber are:

  • Emissions
  • Harmonic Current
  • Voltage Fluctuations
  • Immunity
  • Magnetic Fields
  • Common Mode Disturbances
  • Conducted RF Disturbances
  • Electrostatic Discharge
  • Voltage Dips and Fluctuations
  • Harmonics and Interharmonics
  • Voltage Interruption
  • Voltage Variation
  • Electrical Fast Transients
  • Surge Testing
  • Damped Oscillatory Wave

Disturbance Power Emissions Chamber

Cranage has a purpose-built screened chamber incorporating defined impedance stabilisation for conducting accurate disturbance power emissions measurements (radiated emissions) against the requirements specified in EN IEC 55014-1 for household appliances and electric tools.

For conformity purposes, emissions are measured on the power and auxiliary ports of such equipment up to the frequency range of 1000 MHz. If you want a purpose-built chamber for your business, get in touch with us using the quick and easy contact form below.

GTEM

GTEM Cell For Radiated RF Immunity

Originally used for comparative testing of security products, this test facility used a large GTEM test cell, which was developed and used by Cranage engineers to assist in developing PIR movement detectors with immunity exceeding 50V/m. The testing system, which tests up to 6GHz @ 100 V/m, highlights the equipment under test (EUT) immunity threshold (V/m) against frequency for keyed carrier, pulsed and amplitude-modulated carrier waves. Field strength measurements are made using a 3-axis E- field probe.

Surge Testing

Expertise and investment have led to Cranage being able to validate or characterise surge protection devices (SPD) for their performance associated with maximum surge withstand capability in both a voltage waveform of 1.2/50us at 24 kV and a current waveform of 8/20us at 12kA. Furthermore, we are able to test SPDs for combination surge waves superimposed on the low-voltage power distribution network up to 24 kV / 12 kA. IEC 61643-1 have been previously undertaken here at Cranage and are associated with such product types.
